Before we dive into things proper, do note that this post contains major spoilers for Resident Evil 7, especially if our deductions and assumptions prove to be correct. If you don’t want to run the risk of getting spoiled for the story in Capcom’s latest, you’d be wise to turn back now.

For the rest of you, it’s looking a lot like Albert Wesker might be returning to the seventh entry in this long-running series. Now that the Beginning Hour demo is available on PC, players have datamined the game (of course) and they’ve discovered a ton of files with the name “Albert” in them. Some of these files suggest that this character could be tied to the game’s final boss, as well as some key weapons that you’ll likely find along the way. Do note that none of these files explicitly state Wesker’s surname, so this could be a new Albert altogether, but that doesn’t seem too likely.

When the Beginning Hour demo first launched, players theorized that the woman speaking to the player on the phone at the end of the game could be Ada Wong. We also find a photograph of a helicopter that seems to have the Umbrella logo on it. Given Wesker’s association with Umbrella and Ada, it’s entirely possible that he could make an appearance in this game. We’ll just have to see what crazy reason Capcom comes up with for bringing him back from the dead yet again.

Resident Evil 7 is set to be released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 24, 2017.
