Uncharted 4 is the gift that keeps on giving.
I’ll do my best to keep spoilers to a minimum, but during one of the game’s many intricate puzzles, you are tasked with finding red squares on portraits of famous pirates to decipher some inscribed sigils. After completing 2 rounds of the process, you will be sent to a room where one of the paintings does not have a name above it, and looks like the picture featured above.
Nate remarks about how he doesn’t recognize him, with Sully stating “he looks a lot younger than the other pirates”.
Of course, if you’re familiar with the Monkey Island series then you can tell from his hair to his garb that this is Guybrush Threepwood, the self-proclaimed mighty pirate that gets himself into all kinds of bother in LucasArt’s cult classic adventure games.
However, this Uncharted 4 Easter Egg doesn’t stop there. Once you send a picture of the 4 sigils to your brother Sam, proclaimed expert on pirate insignia, he shoots back with a text about how he doesn’t recognize the one with a monkey on it.
Later in the level you can also find a full body portrait of Guybrush hanging, with the words ‘Thief’ emblazoned across his chest, and his name tag partially obscured.
It’s all very tongue-in-cheek, and is an excellent homage to an absolute classic. Bravo Naughty Dog!
