Nintendo Switch players who also enjoy a game of soccer were pleased to hear the news earlier this year that EA would be releasing FIFA 18 on the new console. It’s slightly different to the version being released on the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but only a little bit.
Given that EA has a history of creating the soccer games mainly for the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, some fans have been concerned that the release of FIFA 18 on the Switch is simply a one off, but this doesn’t seem to be the case.
In an interview with GameSpot, FIFA supervising producer Andrei Lazarescu stated that he believes the FIFA series will continue to support the Switch in the future, saying: “I think we are going to see more FIFA on Switch in the future.”
He went on to state that he believes FIFA 18 is “the best” portable FIFA ever created and went on to address the fact that the Switch version will not feature The Journey mode that’s coming to the console versions.
“The Journey is a mode powered by Frostbite [the engine that current-gen versions of the game run on], it only exists because of Frostbite,” he said. They are not separate. You can’t just [put it on Switch] without taking the whole Frostbite engine. So because this doesn’t have Frostbite, it doesn’t have The Journey.”
There had been reports that, when playing with one Joy-Con, FIFA 18 would lose some of its functionality. Lazarescu spoke about this, saying:
“[When playing with one Joy-Con,] obviously you don’t have the [right] stick, he said. “You don’t have as many buttons, [and] you only have the two bumpers, instead of triggers and bumpers. We created a custom scheme for this, called Four Button Mode. The advantage of it, is that with just one console, you can play FIFA 1v1, without buying anything else.
“You can knock the ball ahead of you by double tapping the sprint button. [For chipped shots and finesse shots,] you can use modifiers–[but] you can’t use skill moves.
“Is this the ideal way to play the game? No,” Lazarescu said. “It’s just a way for people to play the game.”
FIFA 18 is set to be released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, and Switch on September 29.
