Dragon Quest XI has been in the works for quite some time, and new trailers have emerged at Jump Festa 2017 in Japan.

The game is officially titled Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time, and while no official details about story or characters have been released just yet, it looks very much like a Dragon Quest game. The epic opening cinematic shows the fair-haired hero fighting the forces of evil with several able-bodied companions in tow. The art style is simplistic and smooth, continuing Akira Toriyama’s fantastic work on the series.

The second piece of footage is less interesting, showing a brief conversation between the main character and a mysterious hooded figure. Halfway through the conversation, the stranger pulls back their hood to reveal the face of a young, spikey-haired boy. His blue hair and eyes make him stand out amongst the game’s cast and he is seen in the opening cinematic dual wielding swords. It’s brief but this small clip gives us a look into how conversations and story moments may play out in-game.

The final trailer has a lot more to dissect. The player character is seen wandering through the game’s lush open world, strolling past hulking monsters as they patrol the tranquil fields. He then mounts his horse and begins galloping through the environment, knocking small monsters to the ground as his horse tramples over them. The footage shown up until this point is the PS4 version of the game. The trailer then switches to 3DS gameplay. The top screen displays the game in 3D, similar to that of the PS4, while the bottom screen displays proceedings in 2D, harkening back to previous games in the series.

No combat footage is shown in any of the three trailers but it’s safe to assume that we will be engaging in the series’ typical turn-based battles. Regardless, the game looks beautiful, with a clean, simple art style that makes the game’s cartoonish look come to life.

Also confirmed at Jump Festa were the platforms Dragon Quest XI will release for. It was already known that PS4 and 3DS versions of the title would launch, but Nintendo also confirmed the game’s launch for the Nintendo Switch, although no further details were given on how the game might function differently on Nintendo’s newest console.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time is set to release in 2017 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo 3DS.
