Devolver Digital tweeted the news today that Downwell would be coming to Nintendo Switch. The message instructed users to join their Discord to reveal the release date.

Once joined, you can view a pinned message that confirms the game will be available Jan. 31, 2019. This is just around the corner, so you won’t have to wait long to get your hands on the compelling cave exploring action.

We did know that Downwell was in development for Nintendo Switch thanks to a tweet made by Red Phantom Games that showed the game would be playable in Tate mode (undocked in a vertical position). This seems like the perfect way to experience the game given that it’s heavily focused on traveling downwards at a fast pace. So having that extra space between your character and the bottom of the screen will be helpful.

At that time, it was still not confirmed when it would release or if it might be a Japanese exclusive. We now know for sure that Downwell will be coming to Switch in North America.

Downwell was originally released in 2015 for iOS and Microsoft Windows. The game was later ported to the PS4 and Vita in 2016 where it garnered some more attention. It has not been ported to any systems since and the developers, Red Phantom Games, have been pretty quiet regarding any new projects.

The game is a roguelike with elements of a platformer and a shooter. Players start the game falling down a well with the generic gun boots. These can be upgraded by collecting treasure and visiting shops which will grant players new items that will give their boots more power. Downwell is very much an arcade experience where your high score means everything.

Downwell is available now for iOS, Windows, PS4, and the Vita. You can play it on Nintendo Switch on Jan. 31, 2019.
