Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King will officially hit the Nintendo 3DS on January 20, 2017. Nintendo announced the news today via a press release. The new version of the game packs in a ton of additional features, while also letting you take it with you on the go of course. You can see a new trailer down below.
Two new playable characters will be joining the 3DS version, and a host of new sidequests. Nintendo has also said that the story has been expanded to provide more backstory on The Hero, as well as the game’s villain Dhoulmagus. There’s even a new alternative ending added in, and full voice acting in critically important story cutscenes.
On top of all that a few technical aspects have been changed to streamline the experience like adding in a quicksave feature, the ability to speed up battles, and the ability to take photos. These photos can then be turned in at a certain location in the world for different rewards, and shared via StreetPass. Here’s the game’s official box art, followed by a description of its story from Nintendo.
“The story begins when a jester, Dhoulmagus, comes to Castle Trodain and steals the King’s sceptre. He then uses its power to turn his majesty into a troll, the Princess into a horse and the castle inhabitants into plants. The only one left unscathed from this attack is a castle guard who escaped the curse and must now step up to save the kingdom he’s sworn to protect. Only by traveling the lands, recruiting allies and following the trail of destruction that Dhoulmagus leaves in his wake will The Hero be able to retrieve the sceptre in order to restore Trodain back to its former glory.”
Dragon Quest VIII will launch on January 20, and retail for $39.99. This is the second title of the series to hit 3DS recently, as Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past was also remade for the system, and released this year. Square Enix also recently said that they are “committed” to bringing more Dragon Quest titles to the west in the future.
