The Division

The Division Was Partly Inspired by the Madness of Black Friday

Black Friday is a day when shops in America open their doors and give the public a chance to grab a new plasma TV or gaming console for a much cheaper price than usual. The day has begun to spread across the world, and whilst there’s nothing wrong with trying to snag a bargain, the fights and chaos that often erupt over material goods are upsetting to behold.

In Tom Clancy’s The Division, Black Friday is the day that everything hit the fan and this is no coincidence. In an interview with GamesTM, Ubisoft’s Martin Hultberg explained how Black Friday had an effect on The Division.

“There certainly is a thought in The Division about modern society. When we started looking at footage from Black Friday sales and viewed that next to footage from food riots in disaster areas around the world – there was an eerie resemblance in how people acted. There are reports of fights breaking out over game controllers on discount in the Christmas shopping frenzy. It’s crazy,”

Hultberg went on to explain how the multiplayer aspect of The Division, the Dark Zone, will play and how in some ways it exploits the distrust strangers have for each other.

“Nobody can be trusted in the Dark Zones, so tensions and risks are high, but so are the rewards. The setup allows you a seamless transition between solo, co-op and player verses player. This means no lobbies or menus – it is just one unbroken experience once you start the game. The world consists of areas that facilitate these different ways of playing and you will know, and choose, when you make the transition from one to another,”

Tom Clancy’s The Division is due to be released on March 8 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
