Final Fantasy VII Remake

Cloud’s Design in Final Fantasy VII Remake Has Changed

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

A few Japanese fans that were lucky enough to attend the series’ 30th anniversary exhibition recently were treated to some new glimpses of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake, including a never-before-seen look at protagonist Cloud Strife’s new character design.

According to Japanese publication Games Talk and two Twitter users in attendance (@monoyu_ka and @rikuka_tw), game director Tetsuya Nomura and development leader Naoki Hamaguchi made a surprise appearance and explained that the team wanted to get the spiky, blonde-haired mercenary as close to the original design of the character as possible.

The resulting new look is described as being more mature, though both men did concede that Cloud’s youthful side will be on full display throughout the game, too. “While Cloud may look this way, he was a dork. I believe those of you who played the the original would understand what I mean by saying he’s a dorky character,” Nomura and Hamaguchi stated.

Screenshots showcasing the other members in AVALANCHE were shown too. Biggs is reportedly very handsome in the remake, while Jessie is cute and Wedge is “refreshingly chubby.” Cloud, of course, is as good-looking as fans of the series have come to expect.

Aside from redesigns, Nomura and Hamaguchi offered little else in the way of more information regarding the title except that development is in working order and everything is doing well so far. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet or when those aforementioned screenshots will be made available for the public to witness on their own.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced during Sony’s E3 press conference nearly three years ago. Information regarding the title has been sparse since it was first revealed, though now fans can expect to witness different-looking characters from the ones they’ve seen in early gameplay footage. There’s no word yet as to when the remake will finally see the light of day.
