Sonic Mania’s Competitive Mode has been revealed today, courtesy of a new trailer from Sonic the Hedgehog’s official YouTube account. The feature allows local players to collect items and rings in split-screen format while trying their best to clear times and reach new high scores. Rules are adjustable, meaning players will be allowed to customize their multiplayer sessions in a variety of ways including manipulating what items will be in the stage’s item boxes and how many rounds competitors will go through.

Additionally it appears as though players will be able to choose what characters they would like to play. For now only Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are confirmed for when the game launches next week on August 15. If anything’s known for certain is that the feature definitely harkens back to the days of Sonic 2 on the Genesis, as not only is the screen format nearly identical, but the mode’s UI seems largely unchanged as well.

Sonic Mania, developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, is indeed itself a bundle of nostalgia. Largely inspired by the original Sonic games on the aforementioned Sega Genesis, the game includes remastered 2D stages from these prior games alongside new levels set within a brand new story premise in which Sonic and his pals have to outrun the nefarious Doctor Eggman before he gets to a mysterious power source.

Mania seeks to provides a fresh take on the classics for devoted fans of the series while serving as a gateway for newer fans to get acquainted with the mascot’s origins before another Sonic game, Sonic Forces, releases later this year.
