The blue blur makes a surprising return in Smash on Switch, along with all the other fighters from past games. Like with almost every other character, you will have to unlock him first to have him in your roster. Here’s how to unlock Sonic in Smash Bros Ultimate.
There are three different ways you can unlock Sonic in Smash Bros Ultimate; all of which involve fighting him. Take a look at the methods below:
- Play VS Matches: Sonic is the 17th character you unlock through VS matches. Here’s a more in-depth look at how you can unlock the rest of the Smash cast by duking it out against other players/AI.
- World of Light: You can also unlock the fighter through the single-player World of Light mode. Once you manage to defeat him in battle, he’ll automatically join your roster. He’ll be waiting for you near the end of the map, located in the World of Dark.
- Classic Mode: Clear Smash Bros Ultimate’s Classic Mode once with Mario, eight times with Pikachu, or nine times with everyone else.
With the exception of World of Light, you will need to fight the speedy hedgehog on the Green Hill Zone map. The stage itself is harmless enough, but keep in mind that the ground collapses in the middle of the map.
If you manage to best him in battle, you can finally play as Sonic in Smash Bros Ultimate. Otherwise, you’ll have to rechallenge him again later on.
