In short, if you want access to all that Mario Maker 2 has to offer, then yes, you do need Nintendo Online. That doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to enjoy if you don’t have it though.

If you don’t subscribe to Nintendo’s online system, you’ll still be able to play all of the original story mode that features loads of Nintendo created new levels in each of the game styles featured in Mario Maker 2, and you’ll still be able to create levels and share them with the wider world of players.

All that you won’t be able to do is engage with the online content that makes up Course World. That mode is where you can play all the levels that have been made by other players and where you can join co-op levels with other people from around the world.

Since seeing all of the other levels, downloading them, and playing online requires a connection to the internet, it makes sense that you’d need Nintendo Online to get involved.

You’ll find some of the best Mario Maker 2 content there and it’s the best place for replayability, so getting a Nintendo Online subscription is certainly recommended, but you’re not completely locked out of the game by not having it.

Thankfully, the service is not particularly expensive, and you can even pick up one year of it as part of a Mario Maker 2 bundle, if you don’t already have the game.
