Minecraft: How to Disenchant Items with the Grindstone

Everything you need to know about disenchanting in Minecraft

Enchantments are great little things in Minecraft. Whether you want to turn invisible, breathe underwater for longer, or just add a bit more oomph to your attacks, there’s an enchantment for you. These can be placed on your armor pieces and weapons. However, if you decide you don’t want an enchantment on an item anymore, you’ll likely be wondering how to disenchant items in Minecraft.

Using the Grindstone to Disenchant Items in Minecraft

A Minecraft Grindstone can be used to disenchant items like weapons, armor or books by simply placing your enchanted item in either of the two input slots when interacting with it.

It can also be used to combine two of the same items to forge a new item with the combined durability plus an additional 5% up to the maximum durability for that specific item. During this process, both items are consumed and you’ll remove any enchantments from both items.

By removing enchantments with the Grindstone in Minecraft through either of the above methods, you’ll receive the experience points you spent on the enchantments back, so you can roll for another enchantment at an Enchantment Table.

Grindstones can be found in Minecraft villages, particularly inside the Blacksmith building.

Making a Grindstone in Minecraft

To make a Grindstone, you’ll need the following items:

  • Sticks x2
  • Stone Slab x1
  • Wooden Planks (any type) x2

First, place the stone slab in the center block of the top row in your 3×3 crafting grid. Next, put the two sticks in the top corners next to it. Finally, the two wooden planks go directly below to the two sticks, in the left and right middle row boxes respectively.

Can You Remove Curses with a Grindstone?

No. Curse Enchantments such as ‘Curse of Binding,’ or ‘Curse of Vanishing’ cannot be removed with a Grindstone. However, it’ll remove any standard enchantment.

Should You Use a Grindstone or an Anvil?

A Grindstone can allow you to combine items to repair them, and remove any enchantments, so if you’re specifically looking to disenchant an item, you want to use one of these.

With an Anvil, you can repair, combine and rename items, but your enchantments will remain on the item. This is the best option, especially if you’ve got the best Minecraft armor enchantments and don’t want to lose them.
