It has been confirmed by Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be the final first-party game developed by Nintendo for the Wii U.

Speaking with Polygon, Fils-Aime said: “From a first-party standpoint, there’s no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U.”

This doesn’t mean the Wii U is completely dead. Fils-Aime was quick to say that Wii U games will still be sold at retail and on the Nintendo eShop. He also stated that there have been no talks about shutting down any online services for the console.

“From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future. The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We’re going to continue to support that,” he said.

It would be fair to say that the Wii U was never quite as successful as Nintendo may have hoped. It was never able to do nearly as well as the Wii and the lack of games upon its release did little to attract gamers. However, the past couple of years were better and great titles such as Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon certainly helped the system appeal more to fans.

The Wii U may be coming to the end of its life but there is still plenty to look forward to with the Nintendo Switch.
