Gfk’s physical chart tracking for 2019 has been compiled by Gamesindustry.biz, highlighting the year’s best-selling games in the UK by physical copies sold. Unsurprisingly, FIFA 20 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare lead the way. Also, physical sales are down year-on-year (by 19%), which is in line with trends we’ve seen for quite some time now toward digital gaming — which, incidentally, saw a 1% increase.
It’s also the end of a console generation, too, which isn’t likely to have helped physical sales. Nor is the fact that 2019 saw a lack of major game releases in general.
The website includes a quote from ERA CEO Kim Bayley, who said: “The key message from the games business in 2019 is we need those two new consoles from PlayStation and Xbox — and soon.”
17.6 million boxed games were sold by retailers, according to GfK. In total, these games generated £602.5 million in revenue, which is a drop of 21.7% year-on-year.
Digital sales fared better, but growth was just 1.1% to £3.17 billion (IHS estimates). The data has been compiled together by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA)
Combing both physical boxed game sales revenue of£17. 6 million and a digital sales total of £3.17 billion, UK video game sales generated £3.77 billion in 2019. It’s a drop of 3.4% from 2018.
Below you can check out the full GfK via top 10 via the ERA, which represents physical box sales only.
You’ll notice only six of the below games were released in 2019. Also, Pokemon Sword & Shield would obviously have been much higher if their sales had been combined.
