It doesn’t matter whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or another winter holiday; December is a time of merriment and gift-giving, and for gamers, that usually means new video games. While the actual holidays are a few weeks away, CDProjekt is getting the drop on the season by giving away a free gift —and what a gift it is.
Starting today, PC gamers can receive free copies of Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut Digital Classic Edition. Of course, these are only available through CDProjekt’s proprietary GOG launcher, and you need a GOG account to take advantage of the giveaway. Still, the account is as free as the game, so that is hardly an issue.
If you never heard of Wasteland 2, it is the sequel to the original post-apocalyptic RPG, Wasteland. Yes, Wasteland predates Fallout, as surprising as that might sound, and the games were developed by the same team at Interplay. In fact, Fallout was supposed to be Wasteland 2 but instead mutated into a spiritual successor; the game we know as Wasteland 2 today is the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Wasteland 2 is a slow, rewarding computer RPG that is old-school in every sense of the word. The game shares more than a few mechanics with the first two Fallout games, and the version being given away expands on the base experience.
The Director’s Cut comes with a wasteland full of improvements, such as new graphics, character traits, and voice lines. Better yet, since the game is also the Digital Classic Edition, it comes with one more treat: a free copy of the original Wasteland. That’s two games for the price of one, and that price is currently $0.00.
However, while obtaining the copy of Wasteland 2 is painless, the code for Wasteland requires a bit of digging. You need to visit your GOG game library in a web browser (using the GOG launcher doesn’t work), click on your copy of Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut Digital Classic Edition, select the “More” tab, and click on “Serial Keys.” The serial key page contains a url for a “Wasteland 1 gift code,” so copy it into your browser, redeem the code, and Wasteland 1 will grace your GOG library.
Wasteland 2 is only free for the next two days, so you might want to hurry. Plus, the giveaway coincides with a massive winter sale of other games on GOG, which means you can get even more games for pennies on the dollar.
