Epic Games Fortnite Battle Royale is no stranger to records, and now it’s gone and broken another one. Since its introduction in South Korea earlier this week, the game’s peak concurrent players has hit an astronomical 8.3 million.

Sung Chul Park, a spokesperson for Epic Games Korea stated the impressive figures after the game’s debut week in the region.

South Korean players were encouraged to play Fortnite from PC Bang cafes, an internet cafe chain that has been integrated into the game’s map for special PC Bang challenges throughout the week.

The 8.3 million concurrent players worldwide is over double the number of the last official count, when Fortnite hit 3.4 million earlier this year.

For reference, that means there are more players playing Fortnite in a single moment than have played every Unreal game Epic Games has ever made.

As we’ve now updated in our list of the most popular game in the world by peak concurrent players, Fortnite now tops the list, beating out League of Legends and the hugely popular Chinese shooter Crossfire.

As Fortnite looks to assert itself on the esports scene, its popularity in South Korea could prove pivotal. The region has always produced successful esports players in the past.
