The quirkiest and probably weirdest game ever made, Katamari Damacy is making its way to the Nintendo Switch. Praise be to the King of All Cosmos!
Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed that the eccentric and extremely Japanese puzzle-action game Katamari Damacy would return for a new generation of gamers as Katamari Damacy Reroll. This marks the second time the Katamari franchise has been available on the Nintendo console.
As you might expect for a remake, the game will feature some sweet new HD graphics, but since it’s on the Nintendo Switch, it will take full advantage of the console’s capabilities, and I don’t just mean the game can be played on the go. Katamari Damacy Reroll will be playable with either the Joy-Con’s gyro controls or a solo Joy-Con, and it will even take advantage of the Switch’s HD Rumble. Oh, and the game will come with split-screen multiplayer. Remember that ancient feature?
Sadly, we do not know too much about this HD remake other than the aforementioned multiplayer, HD graphics, and motion controls. Katamari Damacy Reroll could be just a plain remake of the original game, or it could include some new levels. It may or may not feature amiibo functionality. The game could even include a sharing feature that lets gamers show off their favorite (and weirdest) creations. But we don’t know any more details, especially if gamers can play it with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
The Katamari franchise has been in hibernation for quite a while. The last proper Katamari game for a home console was released in 2009 for the PlayStation 3. After that, Namco Bandai released two Katamari apps that weren’t well received and a Katamari game for the PlayStation Vita, and we all know how much that handheld flopped.
We will have to wait until the winter to see just how much has or hasn’t changed with Katamari Damacy Reroll. Either way, it’s good to see such a cult classic game make its way onto the Nintendo Switch.
