The Xbox One version of Fortnite will receive cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase with other platforms, Epic Games announced today.
In a partnership with Microsoft, these features will work between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and Android. The studio had announced a mobile port of the game’s popular Battle Royale mode earlier this week, and would be partnering with Sony on cross-play and cross-progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and Android.
“Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles,” Epic Games wrote in a blog post. “We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible, and will bring this functionality to Fortnite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.”
The studio noted that cross-play is opt-in, while Epic Games representative Nick Chester said that console and PC players cannot join mobile matchmaking.
“A PC gamer cannot join a mobile queue, but a mobile gamer can opt in to play with a PC player,” Chester explained on Twitter. “They’re not all dumped into one matchmaking pool.”
Xbox One and PlayStation 4 cross-platform play is still not supported, most likely due to the two console manufacturers being in direct competition. Cross-platform play has been possible with Fortnite before, after a “configuration issue” caused Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players to briefly play in the same matches.
