A lot of work has gone into creating the characters and atmosphere of Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, as shown in the game’s new behind the scenes video.
Posted by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the video offers input on how the team created its main cast of characters for the Studio Ghibli inspired title, with character designer Yoshiyuki Momose giving his account of the process. Aiming to bring the cinematic feel of a Ghibli film to the gaming medium, he and the team have worked meticulously to create characters with designs which feel expressive and engaging.
“The characters may look flat from a distance, but they’ve been created so that they don’t look flat in the game itself,” Momose says. “Creating characters like that is all about focusing on their key characteristics, but it’s not a matter of simply adding more characteristics or traits. Balance is the key when it comes to creating new characters.”
Akihiro Hino, who works on the game’s story as the general director, gives credence to this, attesting to the work Momose has put into both the characters and the world around them through reworking the story to perfection.
“We had more time to work on this game than we did on the first Ni No Kuni, so while we weren’t able to do many retakes for the first game, this time we could retake certain scenes to get them right,” he says.
