Nintendo Won’t Be Taking Splatoon 2 Rage Quitters Lightly

"PREEEEETTY suspicious"
This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Competitive online play has become a cornerstone of the modern era of gaming. Partying up with friends or getting matched with new potential pals for a friendly competition is a source of entertainment that just doesn’t get old. It can, however, get extremely annoying and frustrating. Rage quitters have become a huge problem for developers who are creating games that have online play at their very core. Without creating a system that prevents frequent rage quitting, developers are stuck staring at a game with a ton of potential that keeps being ruined by sore losers who are ruining the experience for the other players on their team. Well, we are days away from Splatoon 2’s release and Nintendo won’t be having any of that.

Players who participated in this weekend’s Splatfest beta discovered a cheeky message would pop up if they decided to leave the game early. “Your previous online play session didn’t end naturally, which is PREEEEETTY suspicious,” the warning reads. “If this keeps happening, we’re gonna have to block you from playing online for a while. Make sure your internet isn’t busted and try again.”

The message seems just as a stern as it is vague. Nobody has confirmed how long the ban will last or if it will become an increasingly longer ban for repeat offenders. It is also unclear if players could be added to a list of permanently banned Splatoon 2 players if they keep insisting on quitting matches early. The message also drew out a few incredibly sympathetic players who were concerned that this might be too harsh for players who really do just live in areas with a spotty internet connection. The message does make a direct reference to this by asking players to make sure their internet isn’t busted but, at a certain point, even having players leave due to poor wifi can have a negative impact on the experience for other players.

The Splatoon series has been off to a strong start and it could be one of the best new IPs from Nintendo so it’s not really surprising to see the gaming giant taking strict measures to make sure the online experience isn’t ruined by players leaving matches early—no matter what the cause may be.

Splatoon 2 is scheduled to release on July 21.
