In Episode 7 of House of the Dragon, the battle lines are being drawn even further, people are picking sides, and the chess pieces are coming into focus in this deadly game of thrones. The Hightowers make their move by calling into question the legitimacy of Rhaenyra’s children and their inheritance to Driftmark, the seat of House Velaryon. To strengthen their claim, why does Rhaenys decide to back Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon?
Why Did Rhaenys Back Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon?
Rhaenys ultimately decides to back Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon because of her husband Lord Corlys. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the decision comes with several monumental bonuses: her grandchildren would inherit Driftmark and the Iron Throne.
It was certainly a nail-biting moment. Just before the meeting, it was starting to look as if Rhaenys might decline Rhaenyra’s offer; after all, she’s under the impression that Rhaenyra had her son Laenor killed.
Despite knowing that Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey are not Laenor’s trueborn children, Lord Corlys believed that names were far more important to history than blood. Rhaenys heard those words out of Corlys’ mouth herself and one could argue seeing Viserys appear before the court helped her make a decision.
Now you understand why Rhaenys decided to back Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon. Not only does it make sense politically, she’s carrying out her husband’s wishes.
