According to 2K themselves, the error stems from not having the latest update data downloaded. The fix explanation from 2K says that you need to wait for the download to finish and head back to the main menu in NBA 2K20.

It also says that “playing a couple of games in “Play Now” mode is enough to trigger the download.” However, it might be best to simply restart your console and check if the update is downloading then.
