The Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Trailer Is a Bit of a (Blue) Blur

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

After months of teasers, rumors, and leaks, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer is finally available for all to see.

The Sonic the Hedgehog trailer establishes several points right out of the gate. Sonic likes to jog at 760 miles per hour; his quills generate electricity even when separated from his body, and he is voiced by Ben Schwartz. But, most importantly, the trailer establishes that Sonic is a cocky, cartoonish, CGI, anthropomorphic hedgehog who looks slightly out of place in a world full of live-action humans. I’ll be honest, I got Sonic 06 flashbacks when I saw him, but then I witnessed the true star of the movie: Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik.

Yesterday, an image of Jim Carrey wearing Dr. Robotnik’s red outfit and goggles leaked onto the Internet. Turns out it was legit, even though his first onscreen appearance in the trailer involves a black suit that reminds me of Dr. Eggman Nega for some reason. Moreover, Jim Carrey’s portrayal is as arrogant and hammy as the doctor we all know and love to hate, even though this version has all the maturity of The Riddler from Batman Forever, also played by Jim Carrey.

Judging by the trailer, Dr. Robotnik is an established robotics genius who isn’t liked by many people, uses drones that (probably) aren’t powered by small woodland creatures, and sports a reasonably-sized mustache. And, he will be brought in by the U.S. military to find out everything he can about Sonic, who apparently traveled from his homeworld (probably Mobius) by unknown means to save the Earth. However, instead of teaming up with his longtime sidekick Miles Prower, Sonic will save the planet with the help of SFPD Officer Tom Wachowski, portrayed by James Marsden. And some golden rings.

It’s too early to judge the movie’s story and comedy (even though the “I have a child in my bag, but it’s not my child” joke is cringier than the Shadow the Hedgehog game), but the trailer reveals the movie will speed into theaters this November.
