Today, Sony revealed its Q2 FY2018 Consolidated Financial Results and the stats were impressive. As of Sept. 30, 2018, the PS4 has shipped 86.1 million units, a staggering number that places it in the top best selling consoles of all time.
Keep in mind, though, there is a difference between units shipped and units sold: this doesn’t mean there are 86.1 million PS4 systems in homes. Instead, it means that Sony has sold 86.1 million systems to retailers.
Regardless, the system is still wildly successful. In 2018’s second fiscal quarter, Sony shipped 3.9 million units, a little less than this year’s first fiscal quarter, in which Sony shipped around 4.2 million PS4s.
The Financial Results also showed a change of an 8% upward revision in sales. This is due to the increase of PS Plus sales, as well as an increase in hardware and software sales. In short, PlayStation is still doing well this generation.
Clearly, the console owes a lot of its success is to the exclusive games available on the platform. Check out our ranking of the major PS4 exclusives here and the games we thing PS4 owes its success to.
