World of Final Fantasy Maxima Coming to Non-Switch Consoles as DLC

Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct was full of Final Fantasy news. Final Fantasy VII, IX, X/X-2, and XII: The Zodiac Age are coming to the Nintendo Switch (and other consoles). Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD is already available on all major consoles, including the Switch. And, let’s not forget that an updated version of World of Final Fantasy titled World of Final Fantasy Maxima is almost ready for release. For you gamers out there who don’t own a Switch, Maxima is also coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. As paid DLC.

This news comes from the official Japanese World of Final Fantasy Maxima website (Gematsu has provided an English cliffnotes version of the site), which states Maxima will launch on all major consoles for the price of 2,400 yen. At the time of writing this article, 2,400 yen amounts to just under $22. However, we do not know if that’s the price just for the English version.

For those of you who weren’t able to watch the Nintendo Direct, World of Final Fantasy Maxima is a “leveled up” version of the base game that lets players control their favorite Final Fantasy characters (dubbed Champions) in battle. Or, to be more specific, the main characters Lann and Reynn can transform into Champions and use their unique abilities. Originally, gamers could only call Champions for single, devastating attacks akin to classic Final Fantasy summons (ironically, iconic summons such as Ifrit, Shiva, and Ramuh can join players’ parties in World of Final Fantasy).

Players won’t just get to control Champions in Maxima, though; the updated version will also come with quite a few new Champions. The Nintendo Direct trailer showed off Zack Fair from Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, but the official site reveals several more characters, including Firion from Final Fantasy II, Noctis from Final Fantasy XV, and Cecil from Final Fantasy IV. Moreover, the site also explains Maxima will come packed with plenty of new enemies to tame and control, such as Yojimbo from Final Fantasy X and Garland from Final Fantasy I. And, since Noctis is coming to the World of Final Fantasy, so is a fishing mini-game —because even royalty understands the importance of fishing.

World of Final Fantasy Maxima is scheduled to release November 6 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. However, the official site doesn’t mention anything about a PlayStation Vita version.
