The game will pick up from where the last game left off and the story will see players leave the relative safety of Moscow and explore further into Russia. New regions can be explored and will feature different weather patterns depending on the season.

The Metro games are based on the post-apocalyptic Metro book series written by the Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. The story is set in a devastated Russia where nuclear war has all but wiped out humanity. The remaining survivors seek shelter in the underground metro tunnels, far from the dangers that lie on the surface.
