HOW MANY PEOPLE PLAY CALL OF DUTY WW2
Call of Duty has long been one of video gaming’s most iconic and popular franchises. Although the first three games earned critical acclaim and plenty of commercial success set in WW2, the series really exploded when it launched its fourth entry, Modern Warfare, back in 2007. Since that time, Call of Duty has continued to evolve into an ever more futuristic shooter, culminating in last year’s Infinite Warfare. But as the trend toward science fiction and high-tech warfare accelerated, fans grew tired of it. As a result, Infinite Warfare failed to live up to commercial projections, forcing Activision to hit the reset button. The result? 2017’s Call of Duty WW2, a return to the series roots. And from what we know so far, fans have responded positively. So how many people are actually playing the game?
While exact sales figures have not yet been made available to the public, Activision has stated that Call of Duty WW2 has sold double the amount of copies as Infinite Warfare. Unfortunately, given that Infinite Warfare performed so poorly (at least by CoD standards), its sales data was never officially revealed. Activision also stated that WW2 “set a record as the best-selling digital full game by units sold on its first day of availability” on the PS4. It also claimed that opening day sales for the game beat out Thor: Ragnarok and Wonder Woman’s opening weekends combined.
Of course, given that Infinite Warfare’s sales were so underwhelming, WW2 selling twice as many at launch might very well sound more impressive than it actually is. Until we have hard numbers, there’s just no way to tell. As a very rough estimate, VGChartz claims Infinite Warfare has sold 7.62 million copies in total. For reference, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 enjoyed the series’ biggest ever launch, recording 6.5 million copies sold in its first day at retail in the US and UK alone.
What we know for certain is that Call of Duty WW2 continues to perform exceptionally in the UK, topping the sales charts for a fifth consecutive week in a row (week ending Dec. 2). Steamspy lists 666,000 owners via Steam — not all that impressive, but the game’s biggest audience is surely on PS4 and Xbox One.
That’s everything we know about how many people play Call of Duty WW2. As more sales data becomes available, we’ll be sure to keep this post updated. For everything else CoD, check out our wiki page.
