Since announcing a Shovel Knight amiibo in August, Yacht Club Games have been quiet on details of the figurine. Now, they’ve announced the release date for the amiibo and all of the things it will add to the game. This includes a brand new co-op mode, exclusive to the Wii U version of Shovel Knight.

The Shovel Knight amiibo will be released Jan. 8, 2016 in North America, and Dec. 11, 2015 in Europe. Like most amiibo, it will cost $12.99 in North America and £10.99/EUR 14.99 in Europe.

Yacht Club’s preview says that this will not be a limited release, so searching through eBay or importing is not recommended.

The Shovel Knight amiibo is compatible with the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game. This will unlock the Custom Knight who has a leveling system, new abilities not available in the original game, and cosmetic options to make the Knight look unique for every player.

The Wii U version of the game will have a co-op mode, but both players are also competing to see who can collect the most treasure in each stage. A newly released trailer shows this mode in action.

Shovel Knight is just over a year old, but is continuing to add new features and playable characters regularly. The co-op mode is one of the bigger changes added to the game, which might justify the price of the amiibo alone.

Will you be adding the Shovel Knight amiibo to your collection? Let us know in the comments.
