Xbox Hardware Revenue Grew 86% Year-on-Year, Content & Services Up 40%; Gaming Revenue Up 51%

Today, Microsoft announced its financial results for the second quarter of FY 2021, related to the period between Oct. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31.

Today, Microsoft announced its financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2021, related to the period between Oct. 1, 2020, and Dec. 31.

Firstly, we get an update on the performance of the More Personal Computing business, which includes Microsoft’s gaming division and the Xbox brand.

You can find all the relevant figures for the bussiness in the slides below.

Gaming revenue for the quarter was $5,031 billion and grew 51% ($1.7 billion according to the form 10Q) year-on-year, while Xbox content and services revenue grew 40% ($998 million) year-on-year driven by strong third-party and first-party games and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.

Xbox Hardware revenue unsurprisingly grew a whopping 86% year-on-year driven by the launch of Xbox Series X|S.

In terms of Microsoft as a whole company, the key results are most definitely positive and are as follows.

  • Revenue was $43.1 billion and increased 17%
  • Operating income was $17.9 billion and increased 29%
  • Net income was $15.5 billion and increased 33%
  • Diluted earnings per share was $2.03 and increased 34%
