Wonder Woman lead actress, Gal Gadot, took to the internet today to announce on Twitter that the sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman has been delayed to 2020.
Previously slated to release next year, in 2019, Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed to the following year and will now premiere on June 5, 2020. This delay pushes the movie into the blockbuster season of 2020, something done deliberately according to Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution, Jeff Goldstein.
“We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs,” Goldstein said in a statement released shorty after Gadot’s tweet.
DC recently pushed the solo Flash movie into 2021, a year after it’s original anticipated release date, 2020. Perhaps this new spot in 2020 is the space Wonder Woman 1984 is looking to fill. As of now, there is no word on what this means for the Wonder Woman sequel and shooting as no further set dates have been announced. Additional photography has not been announced either.
This shift, while sad for fans of the Amazonia goddess, will no doubt be beneficial for other DC properties releasing next year. In 2019, DC fans will be treated to Shazam! and the mysterious solo Joker movie, led by Joaquin Phoenix. By moving to 2020, Wonder Woman joins four other DC movies: Cyborg, Green Later Corpts, Birds of Prey and a sequel to Suicide Squad. No firm dates have been set for those movies (other than a release year of 2020) so don’t hold your breath on that front.
Perhaps Wonder Woman moved out of 2019 to avoid the fourth Avengers movie, sure to set the world on fire, just as Avengers: Infinity War did. We’ll never know, but what we do know is that we won’t be seeing Princess Diana again until 2020.
