The May 2018 NPD numbers have been released and at the top of the sales chart sits the recently-launched Xbox One-exclusive title, State of Decay 2.
Every month, the industry tracking firm, The NPD Group, releases numbers related to hardware, accessory and software sales of video games. Not only do they take a deep dive into the industry as a whole, but they also track the best-selling games of each month. State of Decay 2 was the best-selling title of May, beating out both chart-veterans and newcomers alike. Right behind State of Decay 2 sits the PS4-exclusive title, God of War, and behind God of War, another PS4-exclusive, Detroit: Become Human. It might seem surprising that God of War beat out Detroit: Become Human, but because the latter released on May 25, it only sat on the May market for seven days, while God of War had the entire month to sell.
State of Decay 2 launched on May 22 and despite only receiving less than two weeks of May to sell, it still found its way to the top of the chart. Naturally, State of Decay 2 found itself at the top of the Xbox One sales chart as well, followed by Far Cry 5 and PUBG. At the top of the PS4 chart sits God of War, which is followed by Detroit: Become Human and Far Cry 5. Over on the Nintendo Switch chart, which is physical only, sits Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze at the top. Following Tropical Freeze is Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition and Mario Kart 8.
The top three best-selling games of 2018 are Far Cry 5, God of War and Monster Hunter: World. For the past 12 months though, the top three titles are Call of Duty WWII, NBA 2k18 and Destiny 2 (this title’s number didn’t include PC digital sales).
