Report: PS4 Neo in Works Because Launch PS4s Not Strong Enough for VR

A new PS4 may be in order for VR fans.

While the rumored PS4 Neo remains stepped in mystery, the reason behind the reported new console may be VR. An anonymous industry chief technical officer told Edge Magazine (via IB Times) that Sony is working on the PS4 Neo because launch model PS4s aren’t powerful enough to run Sony’s new VR headsets at a quality level.

“PSVR was going to be terrible on a [launch] PS4,” the source says. “It was going to be truly awful. Something a bit more powerful starts to bring VR into range. If you want to deal with crazy requirements for performance in VR, you absolutely have to do this.” It’s not clear whether the source is speaking of current PS4 models or the original line shipped in 2013.

Edge magazine also sourced a designer in a European studio who noted that, “There hasn’t been a real outcry for more power, apart from developers making VR stuff – and those are weighted more heavily at the moment. VR is the most exciting development in the industry right now, and if it’s here to stay then there will be a lot of demand for more powerful hardware.”

The idea that the PS4 Neo is being designed specifically with VR gaming in mind could help explain why the console is apparently coming with no exclusive titles.

In other PS4 news, Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced that as of May 22 the PS4 has sold over 40 million units.
