The update, entitled Skills 2.0, adds returning character Loader who debuted in the original Risk of Rain. Described as “a slow but powerful bruiser”, Loader uses a grappling hook to traverse levels with ease.

To unlock Loader, you simply need to complete Siren’s Call, a new area that is part of the update.

Running alongside the new character and area is a brand-new skill and skins system called Loadouts.

In hopes to increase the game’s diversity and customization options, this new system allows players to mix-and-match a Survivor’s abilities and skin before beginning a run.

To complement Loadouts, the studio has included new unlockable skills and skins.

To get these, players must complete Survivor-specific challenges. The developer confirmed that additional skills and skins will be coming in the future.

The acclaimed roguelike is still in Early Access, but this hasn’t stopped developer Hopoo Games from rolling out free game-changing updates in the past.

The game’s previous update, Scorched Acres, was similar in scope to Skills 2.0, signifying that the game still has a long way to go.

The full list of updates can be found on the game’s Steam page. If you’re still struggling to unlock Risk of Rain 2’s full roster of characters, then be sure to check out our comprehensive guide.

Risk of Rain 2 is now available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
