DICE Isn’t Developing Battlefield V’s Battle Royale Mode

As Battlefield V pre-orders continue to fall short of EA’s expectations, details about the title’s new battle royale mode remain scarce. The latest tease of the mode came courtesy of a seconds-long tease at the end of the game’s Gamescom trailer featuring a ring of fire shrinking in a similar fashion to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ blue zone. The addition of battle royale to the Battlefield franchise has been met with both praise and criticism, with some bemoaning that developing a battle royale mode will impact other facets of DICE’s latest offering.

Fortunately, those complaints have been assuaged as EA’s global community lead for Star Wars titles Ben Walke confirmed on Reddit that DICE is not developing Battlefield V’s battle royale mode. “[Battle] Royale is being made by a different studio, not DICE,” said Walke. The statement means that neither DICE’s main studio in Stockholm or is supportive Los Angeles-based hub are building the new mode.

While Walke’s remark debunks a major criticism surrounding Battlefield V’s battle royale mode, it doesn’t go so far as to identify the studio charged with building something capable of competing with genre heavyweights PUBG and Fortnite and Call of Duty’s new Blackout mode.

Fans will undoubtedly remain curious until the identity of the studio is revealed, but, until those details come, they can at least rest assured, or worry, that DICE remains focused on the latest installment in the Battlefield franchise. The mystery surrounding who is building that ring of fire will assuredly be reveal in the near future.
