Independent developer Illusion Ray Studio has launched a Kickstarter for its photorealistic horror game, The Beast Inside, which they claim will realize a brand new take on the thriller and survival horror genre. The project is already well on its way to meeting its near $50,000 goal.

The game’s story weaves together the lives of two separate protagonists living in different eras. Adam, a Cold War cryptanalyst who stumbles upon an unsolved mystery that took place in an abandoned home; and Nicholas, a man from the 19th century, whose own past is shrouded in mystery. The bulk of the story will be exploring how the events in these different time periods are related.

Illusion Ray is a team comprised of developers who previously worked for studios such as Platige Image, Fuero Games, and Farm 51. The game’s Kickstarter page outlines their ambition to “create a game with a very strong, twisted narrative, that will keep players on the edge.”

The Kickstarter page also went on to explain that the Illusion Ray team are fans of horror games and movies, much of the inspiration for The Beast Inside is heavily inspired from titles such as Resident Evil 7, Amnesia, the now-canceled Silent Hills, and movies like Shutter Island and Memento. Just the first few seconds of The Beast Inside trailer are reminiscent of the first few minutes of Resident Evil 7, namely when Ethan is driving through the Louisiana bayou to get to the infamous Baker house.

In addition to being a multi-layered, story-driven game, The Beast Inside will also include environmental puzzles that need to be solved in order to overcome the game’s enemies. You can check out the trailer below:

The Beast Inside already has a demo out, which can be played on PC via Steam.
