Battleborn: How to Beat The Renegade, Episode Two

The Renegade Prep

Battleborn has many ways to play. You have several Versus modes that you can play with others or against the AI, and a full story for players to run through with all of the heroes. The story is broken down into eight episodes, not counting the Prologue. One of those missions tasks the player with breaking out a Jennerit solidier by the name of Caldarius. The Renegade is structured differently from most of the other missions in Battleborn, presenting quite the challenge to many players.

Going in, there are a few things you need to be aware of. Shard management is very important. If you spend all of your Shards too quickly, you will only make the later segments of the level much more difficult. Unlike other missions, there aren’t many large Shard crystals from which you can get a lot of currency from. With that in mind, pick up ever small shard cluster you see and blow up all shard tanks (just stand back when you do).

For Gear, anything with skill cooldowns is helpful, but don’t go for all epic or even rare, for that matter. Those cost more shards than common and uncommon. Like we said before, you’ll want to manage those.

As far as Battleborn selection goes, any ranged character will do if you’re playing solo. Melee-focused heroes will have an issue with the constant shift in range between enemies, so better to play it safe. If playing with others, you can use anyone. Now that you’re all set, it’s time to get started. 

Tower Defense

The Renegade revolves around three different tower defense sections. There are large towers which serve as batteries to charge Caldarius’ power, and you need to make sure that Jennerit forces don’t take them down before he’s finished charging. This is where your Shards management comes into play.

To assist you with the defense sections, you can set up traps and turrets. For the first two defense sections, we suggest not worrying too much. You can cover the tower pretty well on your own. At the end of the third wave, you’ll deal with a much larger enemy, but for some reason it will target you rather than the tower, so there isn’t much to worry about.

The third defense section takes place indoors after you cross the large bridge. This is the part of The Renegade where you’ll want to get your turrets and traps in order. There are multiple entry points from above and the sides which large and ranged enemies will make use of. Turrets and traps will ensure that nothing bad happens. I suggest using every single node available to you and investing in the Repair Drone. This will keep your defenses healed up.

The turrets, particularly the ones that fire missiles, will do a lot of the heavy lifting for you. Just keep an eye on your minimap for the larger enemy markers (they look like small banners) to help out the machines. After you’re done here, the boss will show his face. 

Jailer Hylis

If you took our advice and packed the room full of defenses for the third segment of tower defense, then Jailer Hylis will be a breeze. As soon as he enters the room, all of your turrets will start focusing on him. Instead of coming after you, he’ll try and deal with them for a while, leaving him completely open to your attacks. Just keep hammering him as long as you can and when he gets down to around 1/3 of his health, he’ll head outside.

Follow him and he’ll start summoning smaller bots to assist him, but pay them no mind. There is a lot of cover out here and his large frame limits where he can stand making him a pinch to eliminate.

There are some turret nodes outside where you fight him, as well. So if you feel you need a little extra firepower, especially if playing solo, feel free to throw a couple up. Chances are you won’t need them, as your indoor defenses should have left him plenty weak. Now you just have to finish him off and fly away with Caldarius. You’re all done with The Renegade, congratulations!
