Accompanying the news was a new launch trailer showcasing the atmospheric action-horror experience in all its glory. Go ahead and check out said footage down below:

Combining the tense atmosphere of Ridley Scott’s Alien with the 2D exploration of a Metroidvania like Axiom Verge, Hidden Deep is an eerie trip into the bowels of the earth where something sinister is looking below. In essence, it’s a bit like Spelunky, but with more, well… horrifying monsters that want to eat your face off.

Thankfully, players will be outfitted with a handful of nifty gadgets, weaponry and vehicles to help them on their explorative journey into the unknown. Primarily a single-player campaign, Hidden Deep also boasts an extra Challenge Mode for single-player, as well as online and local co-op play.

For more information about Hidden Deep, here’s the rundown courtesy of an official press release from Cogwheel Software that we received today:

Fans of 80s-horror, rejoice! Today, the sci-fi thriller Hidden Deep, developed by Polish one-man studio Cogwheel Software, enters Early Access on Steam and sends a reconnaissance mission into a claustrophobic research facility where nameless horrors lurk. Armed with various gadgets, players have to explore the dark, abandoned depths alone or in special co-op missions. Hidden Deep will continuously receive new content and improvements during the Early Access phase.

In Hidden Deep, players explore a vast suboceanic research and mining facility, inhabited by alien creatures brought to life in a 2D game world full of action, mystery, danger, and death. They must command their team members and find out what happened in the abandoned corridors and caves, unraveling a dark, sci-fi horror mystery inspired by classic movies from the 1980s.

To explore the depths and find the missing researchers, the rescue team has a variety of tools at their disposal. Learn to coordinate your team members, master the grappling hook to avoid plummeting to your death or bashing your head in, use drones to scan the colossal cave systems, operate heavy machinery to explore new areas of the research station, and blast your way through to new caves with demolition charges. Shoot or sneak your way through dangerous traps and alien lairs – and be prepared to die. A lot.

Players don’t have to spend all their time alone in the depths: They can work together with a friend on specific missions in challenge mode, either via local multiplayer or the Steam remote play feature. Online co-op functionality will be added during the Early Access phase.

Features:

– Gripping, gritty sci-fi story. The story pays homage to many classic movies of the 1980s such as AliensThe Thing, Virus and The Blob.

– An arsenal of tools – from grappling hooks and scanners to drones, weapons and heavy machinery.

– More than 20 hours of gameplay in Story Mode (to be completed during the game’s Early Access).

– Challenge mode for even more in-depth adventure.

– Local co-op and remote play co-op already available (online co-op will be introduced during the game’s Early Access).

Hidden Deep is available now in Steam Early Access.
