What the Mother of Pearl Is in Survivor 36
Survivor is one of the most popular reality TV series currently airing on CBS, and it’s now in its 36th season. This week’s episode introduced a brand new challenge involving an item called the Mother of Pearl. As pleasant as that sounds, it’s really not.
Do note that we’re about to spoil the challenge in episode 9 of Survivor: Ghost Island (season 36). If you haven’t caught up with the series yet and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read ahead.
In this week’s episode, the classic Survivor gross food challenge made a return. As you might expect by now, these challenges always involve our castaways eating really disgusting food and doing their best to keep it down and not throw it up. The challenge started off relatively easily enough, but the last couple of food items were straight up horrid. One of the final items was called the Mother of Pearl, and it certainly gave the Survivor castaways quite a bit of trouble.
If you’re wondering exactly what the Mother of Pearl is, we have an answer for you. According to Wikipedia and The Spruce Crafts, this is the “common name for an iridescent nacre coating, a blend of minerals that are secreted by oysters and other mollusks and deposited inside their shells, coating and protecting them from parasites and foreign objects.” It’s a material that’s usually used to make jewelry, but, y’know, sometimes you can eat it too.
CBS doesn’t have a standalone clip of the food challenge itself at the moment, but the full episode is now available on the official site so you can check out the Mother of Pearl and other delicacies for yourself.
And that’s what the Mother of Pearl is in the latest episode of Survivor. For more on the show, be sure to search for Twinfinite.
