How to Backward Somersault in Super Mario 64

This is probably one of the more straightforward moves to pull off in 3D Mario games. It’s not like the long jump, triple jump, or the side somersault, which require precise inputs to perform. No, the backward somersault is much more forgiving.

However, it still requires multiple button inputs. If you run into a spot where you need to get some extra height, stop moving and turn your back towards the ledge that you want to jump onto. That second part is crucial since this move will send you high but also backward.

Now hold ZL to crouch, then press B at any time to jump. Mario will go flipping backward and hopefully get you up to that high platform you were aiming for. You can also move the control stick to make Mario move even further backward while performing this jump.

Here’s a quick little rundown on how to backward somersault in Super Mario 64:

  1. Press and hold ZL

    This will make Mario crouch.

  2. Press B while crouching

This will make Mario do a backward somersault. You can also move the control stick to make Mario move even further horizontally during the jump.

That’s all there is to know about how to backward somersault in Super Mario 64. Also, it’s important to note that this jump move can be done fairly quickly. We just wanted to slow down the steps for the sake of clarity. You can check out our wiki guide or search for Twinfinite for more tips on the 3D All Stars collection.
