Stardew Valley Pufferfish Guide: How to Catch and Farm It

The pufferfish are elusive

In Stardew Valley, the Pufferfish is an ocean fish caught at Pelican Town Beach on sunny Summer days between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, or year-round on Ginger Island. It is a challenging Floater type fish required for the Specialty Fish Bundle and Demetrius’s Aquatic Research quest.

How to Catch a Pufferfish in Stardew Valley

To target a Pufferfish on the mainland, head to the Pelican Town Beach ocean during clear weather in the Summer season. The fishing window is short, lasting only four hours each day. Rainy or overcast weather completely removes the species from the active spawn table.

Players can review the location rules, temporal availability, and environmental requirements across each region to plan an efficient fishing route.

Unlocking Ginger Island removes the narrow four-hour window. On the island, ocean tiles yield Pufferfish at any hour of the day or night during any season, provided the weather remains sunny. Equipping Magic Bait on an Iridium Rod overrides all weather, time, and seasonal restrictions, allowing players to catch Pufferfish from mainland ocean waters during rainy Winter days.

Map Landmarks and Fishing Location Exploits

Understanding spatial coordinates and map state schedules allows players to maximize efficiency and bypass normal progression gates.

  • Left Beach Warp Totem Exploit: Stand on the far left edge of Pelican Town Beach, directly next to the stone Warp Totem landmark. The game engine calculates fishing zone quality based on orthogonal distance to the nearest walkable land tile. Because this vector sits adjacent to a deep water trench, casting from this spot forces the engine to register Fishing Zone 5 even at Fishing Level 0. Landing a Perfect minigame catch from this tile on Spring Day 2 elevates the catch to Iridium quality.
  • Summer 28 Festival Lockout: On Summer 28, Pelican Town Beach is locked at 6:00 AM to prepare for the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies festival, preventing mainland fishing. Summer 27 is the final mainland harvesting day of the season. Players on the Beach Farm layout can bypass this lockout by casting directly into their farm shoreline, which remains open on festival days.
  • Ginger Island Water Zones: Pufferfish only spawn in saltwater ocean tiles along Island West, Island South, Island Southeast, and inside the Pirate Cove. Casting into freshwater rivers or dig site streams on Ginger Island will not yield a Pufferfish.

Mastering the Floater Minigame Pattern

The Pufferfish shares the erratic Floater movement profile with the Blobfish, and leans on the same Smoker-and-pond profit engine that makes the Flounder secretly powerful.  Floaters rapidly accelerate upward before falling back down with high inertia.

To counter this pattern, keep the green capture bar slightly above the fish icon when it occupies the lower half of the screen. Because the capture bar ascends faster than it falls, holding the bar slightly above the fish gives maximum reaction time when the fish shoots upward. Equip an Iridium Rod with a Trap Bobber to slow progress bar decay by 33% whenever the fish slips outside the bar.

The engine calculates the base size factor fishSize at the instant of the hook strike using active Fishing Zone integer D, Fishing level S, and a random modifier R between 90 and 110:

fishSize = (D / 5) x ((S + 2) / 10) x (R / 100)

This factor maps to initial length L in inches using hardcoded boundaries:

L = floor(minFishSize + (maxFishSize – minFishSize) x fishSize + 1)

With minimum size set to 1 and maximum size set to 36, maximum theoretical length reaches 37 inches. Physical shrinkage occurs during reeling, deducting 1 inch for every 800 milliseconds the fish icon spends outside the green bar:

L(final) = max(L – floor(T / 800), minFishSize)

Catching a fishing treasure chest activates the 800 millisecond shrinkage cycle continuously for the remainder of the minigame, making a maximum length 37 inch catch alongside a treasure chest impossible. Catch experience scales with quality integer Q and species difficulty integer 80:

XP = (Q + 1) x 3 + floor(D(species) / 3)

Achieving a Perfect catch on an Iridium quality specimen applies a 2.4 multiplier, granting 98 XP.

Profit Optimization and Fish Pond Yields

In Version 1.6, processing raw fish through the Fish Smoker doubles base value. Because smoked fish are Artisan Goods, fishing professions stack multiplicatively with the Farming Artisan profession:

Price(smoked) = Price(raw) x 2.0 x 1.5 x 1.4 = Price(raw) x 4.2

Under the Angler and Artisan configuration, an Iridium Pufferfish sells for 1,680g when smoked. Placing a Pufferfish into a Bait Maker creates 5 to 10 Targeted Baits, which multiply the locational spawn rate by 1.66.

For passive income, build a Fish Pond through Robin for 5,000g, 200 Stone, 5 Seaweed, and 5 Green Algae, and consider where the strongest fish ponds sit once you’re optimizing profit.  Pufferfish reproduce every 4 days. To expand capacity from 3 to 10 fish, complete three quest tiers:

  • Population 3 to 5: Deliver 3 Driftwood, 1 Frozen Geode, or 1 to 2 Seaweed.
  • Population 5 to 7: Deliver 2 Clams or 2 Coral.
  • Population 7 to 10: Deliver 2 Aquamarine, 1 Mussel, or 2 Sea Urchins.

At a maximum population of 10, the pond has a 95% daily probability to produce yellow Pufferfish Roe worth 130g base. Processing Roe in a Preserves Jar creates Aged Roe worth 260g base, or 364g with the Artisan profession. Applying a Golden Animal Cracker permanently doubles all pond output.
