Recommended Videos

Sea of Thieves is finally out in the open waters and you can your pirate pals can set sail and start your adventures. You can go hunting for treasure, complete bounties, attack skeleton fortresses, play music, get drunk and more. Just about everything you would expect a pirate to do.

However, what is a pirate without his/her buried treasure? Of course in Sea of Thieves you’ll be able to go forth and dig up lots of buried treasure and tell plenty of pirate jokes along the way, like this one: How do pirates know that they are pirates? They think, therefore they ARR.

Anyhoo, you’d think when you dig up a buried treasure, that you would be able to open it up and see its contents. But oddly enough, you can’t. You can’t open the chests in Sea of Thieves. Just return to the outpost and turn them in for gold. Maybe it’s a little unsatisfying, but you know what’s in there. It’s just gold coins. If the news that you can’t open the chests makes you sad, here’s another pirate joke to cheer you up: What’s a pirate’s best subject? ARRRRT.

That does it for how to open chests in Sea of Thieves. Be sure to check out our wiki for more guides.
