How to Soft Reset in Pokemon Sword & Shield

Unfortunately, for the second Pokemon release in a row, there’s actually no way to soft reset the game. Resetting the game has to be done the old fashioned way: closing the application on the Switch home screen, then starting it up again.

To do this, just hit X when over the game’s icon on the Switch home screen, then select Close. After that, all you need to do is press A to start it up again.

Luckily, the game gets from title screen to gameplay fairly quickly. This means that you can quit out, then jump back in with ease. This isn’t the kind of reset that fans want, but hopefully, the functionality will be brought back in future installments.

There are other games on the Nintendo Switch that are able to soft reset, so it’s not too far out of the realm of possibility for this series on the console.

The same method had to be used for Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu & Eevee when wanting to reset. This means that the days of resetting to get a shiny starter are behind us, for now. That’ll have to be done through breeding this time around.

Speaking of Pokemon Let’s Go, you can obtain either a Pikachu or an Eevee in Sword & Shield if you have a save file from one of those games.

That’s everything you need to know about how to soft reset in Pokemon Sword & Shield. If you’re looking for more tips on the game, check out our guides below:

Can you soft reset in Sword and Shield?

No, there is no way unless you simply close out the game as you would any other Switch application.
