Can You Get the Fishing Rod in Pokemon Let’s Go?

Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee are full-on HD remakes of the original Game Boy titles that are sure to make longtime players feel nostalgic as they romp through the Kanto region yet again. However, a few things have been changed here as well, such as the fishing rod mechanic. Here’s what you need to know about getting the fishing rod in Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee.

The short answer is, no. You can’t get the fishing rod in Pokemon Let’s Go. One of the major changes made in this game was the removal of random, wild encounters, and just having all the wild Pokemon be visible in the game itself. This way, you could pick and choose which creatures you wanted to interact with.

Because of this, Game Freak has decided to remove the fishing rod as well, which means that you won’t be getting the Old Rod, Good Rod, and Super Rod this time around.

Catching Water-type Creatures

With that in mind, how exactly do you catch Water-type creatures in Pokemon Let’s Go then? The answer lies in this game’s Surf ability, which has now been replaced with Sea Skim, one of the five Secret Techniques available in the game.

Similar to Surf, Sea Skim allows you to ride your Pokemon in water bodies, allowing you to visit new areas and get to locations you couldn’t access before. Once you reach Fuchsia City, you’ll be able to talk to a man with a surfboard, who will then give you the Sea Skim secret technique.

With Sea Skim, you’ll be able to roam about in the water, which in turn allows you to interact with Water-type Pokemon so you can catch them. So, even without the fishing rod, you’ll still be able to catch Water-type creatures once you get to Fuchsia City. It’s just going to take you a little longer to get to that point.

And that’s pretty much all you need to know about getting the fishing rod in Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Be sure to check our Pokemon Let’s Go guide wiki or search for Twinfinite for more tips and information on the game.
