Getting Companion Abilities in Outer Worlds

The good news is that you don’t have to do a whole lot to actually ‘get’ companion abilities in Outer Worlds. Companions will automatically have their own unique ability to use, but you’ll need to have an Inspiration stat of at least 20 in order to use them.

To add points to this stat, you can either do this with those that you’re given at the very beginning of the game, or by spending the skill points you earn every time that you level up.

As soon as you’ve reached 20 in your Inspiration stat, you’re then ready to use them in battle.

Level up your Inspiration stat to 20 and ensure you’ve got a companion with you.

How to Use Companion Abilities in Outer Worlds

To use companion abilities in Outer Worlds, simply press left or right on the d-pad when you’re in battle.

The direction you press will depend on which of the two companion abilities you want to use. Left will be assigned to one particular companion, while right will be assigned to the other companion you’ve selected to accompany you.

You can’t just spam these abilities now that you’ve unlocked them, though. Each companion ability will have its own cooldown which you’ll need to keep an eye on.

There are perks that can help you reduce companion ability cooldown by killing enemies or getting headshots, but of course you’ll be spending your hard-earned perk points on them.

Time needed: 1 minute

Using companion abilities

  1. When you’re in combat, press left or right on the d-pad to use that corresponding companion’s ability.

  2. You’ll need to wait a little while for the ability cooldown to complete before you can use it again.
