Rather than only being in control of one individual character, Ni No Kuni 2 allows players to control individual party members, both when traversing the game world and when in battle. While playing as your character of choice during exploration serves as a purely an aesthetic feature, the ability to switch between them during battle is hugely important when taking on Ni No Kuni 2’s most difficult opponents. Since each character possesses different special abilities, spells, and attacks, you’ll want to get comfortable switching quickly for maximum effectiveness.

Doing so isn’t difficult at all, but it’s somewhat glossed over in Ni No Kuni 2’s tutorial. Simply pressing up on the d-pad will switch characters in battle. This also works when you’re traveling the game’s world map too, so there’s no need to go into the menu and manually move whichever member you want to play as to the top. Remember, though, you can only pick three party members, so you won’t be able to cycle all of your characters in battle – just the ones that you’ve added to your party.
