Doom Eternal‘s relentless action can be pretty tough, with that being partly down to the variety of enemies you face throughout the campaign. The Marauder is an enemy you’ll begin to encounter about half way through the game, and it’s tough. So that you’re not struggling too much, here’s everything you need to know about how to beat Marauder enemies in Doom Eternal.
When you first encounter the Marauder in the Arc Complex mission, it’s essentially treated as a boss fight, with him talking in an intro and then being the focus of a fight. It’s very tough the first time you face him – maybe even more so than some of the actual boss fights.
You don’t come across them many times in the rest of the game, since they’re so tough, but don’t think you’re past it when you beat the first fight.
How to Beat Marauder in Doom Eternal
The first thing we’d recommend you do any time you fight a Marauder is clear the rest of the room or arena first. You can escape the Marauder long enough that it can become your sole focus at the end of the encouter.
That is important because it allows you to give all your attention to him, treating it like a boss fight.
Then, you need to keep it at mid-range and try to back away from him in a straight line as much as you can. This allows you to look for the brief openings to attack.
Some of his attacks simply can’t be stopped, and he can’t be attacked most of the time. Stay too close and he’ll keep his shield up, blasting you with his shotgun; stay too far away and he’ll just throw his axe at you, which can be tough to dodge.
You need to stay in mid-range, because that’s what prompts the two attacks that can be countered.
If the Marauder lift his axe over his head with both hands or initiates a spin in either direction, you’ll be able to counter. His eyes will flash green, which is when you can do damage.
Because of how briefly he’s vulnerable, you need to use your Super Shotgun really if you want to do enough damage. The single shot damage of the other weapons simply isn’t high enough. Keep backing off, staying in the right range, and blast him in the face when his eyes flash.
Do not forget about his other attack either. The flaming big cat like thing is vicious and hard to escape. You need to take it out early so that you’re not attacked by the Marauder while you’re distracted. Thankfully, it can only take a couple of bullets from any weapon.
Finally, since the Marauder is so agile, being able to teleport behind you and flank you easily, you’ll take damage. That’s okay though because two basic demons will continue to spawn every 30 seconds or so throughout the encounter.
You can the use them to top up your shotgun ammo by chainsaw killing one (square/X) and Glory Killing the other (R3) to get more health. Just pop one with a few Plasma Rifle rounds, until they flash orange, and then melee them to get the blue orbs.
If you keep your shotgun out, you’ll probably kill them outright, not getting as much health as you might need for the rest of the Marauder fight.
In short, here’s what you need to do to beat the Marauder in Doom Eternal
- Clear out the area before trying to attack it
- Stay at mid-range and back away in a straight line
- Use your Super Shotgun to attack when his eyes turn green
- Take out the flaming summon as soon as you see it
- Use the two respawning fodder demons as your ammo and health supply
