Chainsaw Man isn’t exactly a show that could be called heartwarming, and it has a plethora of storylines that offer a twisted take on the usual anime tropes and norms. Case in point: The protagonist Denji is head over heels for Makima, who appears to care for him but also treats him like a possession or a pet. All the same, you’ve probably got a burning question dwelling in your mind as a result: Do Denji and Makima get together in Chainsaw Man, and is it anything like what Denji expects?
Well, for better or worse, we’ve got an answer for you. Do be warned, though: There are *Massive Spoilers Ahead.*
Does Denji Get Together With Makima in Chainsaw Man? Explained
Though Denji and Makima never get together in a traditional sense, their relationship does change in a pretty unusual way near the end of the series.
After Aki’s death at his hands, Denji is invited over to Makima’s place in an attempt to make him feel better about the loss of one of his closest friends. Once there, he finds a pack of dogs she owns who are all happy and carefree. This proves very effective, and as Denji starts to feel like her home is the best place to be, He makes a request of Makima: He wishes to be one of her dogs.
Since she owes Denji any wish of his choosing, Makima accepts the request and agrees to keep Denji as a pet. However, this also means that Denji has to obey any command she gives him and never disobey her. She then uses this fact to get him to open her door and reveal Power, who she then kills using the abilities of the Darkness Devil that she defeated.
What Are Makima’s Real Intentions?
Makima does this because it was always her intention to convince Denji to enter into such a relationship with her in Chainsaw Man.
Being the Control Devil, she needed to get Denji to break his contract with Pochita of “Living a normal life” in order to nullify the contract, making it possible for her to make one with him. She would then be in control of the Chainsaw Devil, which can erase Devils from existence entirely by eating them.
This is the reason she flirted with Denji at all during the series. By making herself seem like the one who cared about him the most, she could force him to hoist all of his hopes and dreams of a normal life onto having a relationship with her. All the while, she set it up so that he’d lose every other person that was important to him, only to realize too late that she was responsible for all of their deaths.
It’s more than a little twisted. Like we said at the start of the guide, though, this is Chainsaw Man’s MO as an anime and manga series, and it rarely lets its readers and viewers experience the bog-standard version of tropes or storylines.
