In addition to your standard attacks and platforming moves, you’ll have access to special abilities in Bloodstained Ritual of the Night to aid both your offense and traversal. These abilities are acquired by collecting shards, which are dropped from certain enemy types. But there’s more to it than simply collecting the item and holding onto it; they can be improved for more power. Here’s how to upgrade shards.
How to Upgrade Shards in Bloodstained Ritual of the Night
If you look at a shard in your inventory, you’ll notice that in addition to the stats listed on the left-hand side (pictured above), there are two more stats on the lower right: Grade and Rank.
These stats essentially tell you how many times the item has been powered up, but they offer different advantages.
Grade improves a shard’s power based on how many copies you have collected of that specific one. The more duplicates you carry, the stronger their associated attacks or effects.
Rank, on the other hand, is determined by the number of times you have upgraded a shard via Johannes. The effects of increased Ranks differ, such as increasing the number of projectiles or lengthening their reach.
Both Grade and Rank’s maximum level is 9. Note that Passive Shards become Skill Shards when they hit level 9.
Upgrading a Shard
To upgrade a shard, you will need to go and talk to Johannes at the village. When you interact with him, choose the Enhance Shards option. If you have multiple copies of the same shard, you can use the excess to upgrade its Rank at the cost of its Grade.
