Activision is one of the the world’s most well-known video game publishers and has been a mainstay in the industry for a very long time now. Everything ranging from skateboarding to FPSs to platformers are on Activision’s radar. Let’s take a look some of the best Activision games that are easily accessible and are worth playing right now.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare
Best Activision Games
Probably the series that Activision is best known for, Call of Duty is up there with the biggest gaming IPs or all time. Whether it be the first Modern Warfare, which brought multiplayer FPS to the masses, or the bombastic recent entries, most people have at least tried out a Call of Duty title.
While there are various great games in the series from the last 15 years, and Black Ops Cold War is due to release soon, 2019’s Modern Warfare is the one we’d recommend first.
Not only is the campaign the best for a while, featuring some slower moments that prove that Call of Duty can be more than explosions and rockets, but the multiplayer is the deepest ever.
Then there’s its link to Warzone, Call of Duty’s premier battle royale game, which has taken the shooter world by storm in 2020. With ten of millions of players and constant updates, it’s always a good time to try it out, and it’ll continue to evolve over the coming months and years.
If you’ve enjoyed almost any other first-person shooter, Call of Duty is a series that’ll grab you in an instant and is full of shooters that can be considered amongst the best Activision games.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro is quite a departure from the kind of games Activision usually publish. Developed by FromSoftware, it’s a pretty hardcore action adventure games that’s along the same lines as the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
For Shadows Die Twice though, the setting is now late 16th century Sengoku period Japan and follows your character as they attempt to get revenge on a samurai clan.
It’s tough, so you’ll likely be frustrated by the parry based gameplay if you’re used to this type of game, but it’s a lot of fun if you can get to grips with it.
As we said in our review, “Sekiro is a game that relishes in its ability to challenge and punish the player with little to no room for error. The developer’s methods of storytelling may start to feel a tad stale at this point, but the game still manages to capture that immense feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment like no other.”
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2
Best Activision Games
The Tony Hawk Pro Skater series has certainly had its ups and downs over the last 20 years. From the first couple, which are regarded amongst the best games of all time in any genre, to the disaster that was number five, it’s been all over the place.
In an attempt to bring back the glory days of the original games, Activision has led a remake of the first two from the ground up, giving the games the same treatment that the Crash Bandicoot games got for the ‘N Sane Trilogy.
Activision’s Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 package is an excellent one, updating the famous locations without losing the feel that made the games special. It doesn’t feel old either, with both games being worth playing whether you have an affinity for the original or not.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
We’ve already mentioned Crash’s ‘N Sane Trilogy remake package, which we’d also recommend, but his series has seen a brand new game release since then.
The first fully modern Crash game, It’s About Time, is an expansion of the original formula, introducing new characters and abilities, without losing the challenge and collectible focus of the originals.
We enjoyed it a lot, especially how it felt like a true sequel to Crash’s original adventures, rather than just a throwback to what everyone used to love.
Whether you’re a long time Crash fan, a master of platformers, or a sucker for collectibles, It’s About Time will be perfect for you.
Guitar Hero Series
Best Activision Games
Guitar Hero might be dead at this point, we’re not entirely sure, but that doesn’t mean the games are any less special. Following the launch of Guitar Hero 3 in 2007, loads of entries launched, even focusing on individual bands like Metallica and AC/DC.
2015’s Guitar Hero Live was a less than successful attempt to reboot the series, incorporating live-action performances, and it’s the last game released as part of the series.
Even if Guitar Hero never makes a glorious comeback, going back to the older games is still great because playing along to your favorite music doesn’t age poorly like other games can do.
You can pick up Live or 3, alongside a guitar controller, on the cheap now, and they’re great as party games or a way to relax alongside some classic rock tunes. I hope it comes back properly soon though!
Skylanders
Skylanders is one of the most popular franchises of the last 10 years. The excitement for toys-to-life games has died down in recent years though, with the last Skylanders game releasing in 2016.
Between the first one in 2012 and the latest in 2016, six games came out, bringing loads of new characters to the series and little toys to the real world.
While the gameplay in most was pretty simple, they’re great games for kids getting into gaming. Also, with so many games launching in a short space of time, there are so many options to look into and toys to pick up.
If there are any other Activision games that you’d recommend, be sure to shout them out in the comments down below!
