Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Get Blue Roses

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

If you ever feel like you’ve run out of things to do in Animal Crossing New Horizons, don’t forget that you can always try to get into the most annoying activity of the game: flower breeding. By breeding flowers together, you can get hybrid flowers of a different color and if you’re an entrepreneurial soul, you could even sell the rare ones to other players for a good amount of Bells. Here’s how to get the blue roses in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Getting Blue Roses in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Out of all the hybrid flowers that are available in Animal Crossing New Horizons, the blue roses are definitely the most annoying and troublesome to get, even more so than the dreaded green mums.

This is because the process requires breeding multiple hybrids of the same colors, and the chances of getting the colors you want are so low (without the appropriate boosts) that it can take days or even more than a week to get your first blue Rose.

Boosting Flower Reproduction Rate

Watering your flowers, having your residents water them, or letting them get watered naturally by the rain will boost your flower reproduction rate by 5%, which is extremely low. However, you can boost that rate even further by having online visitors water them.

The first visitor will increase the rate to 25%, and you can boost it to 80% with at least five visitors watering your flowers. If possible, try to get five different people to water your flowers each day to basically guarantee your chances of getting a new flower the next day. You still might not get the color you want, but at least the reproduction rate will speed up the process.

Combination for Blue Roses

Now we can get to the meat of things. The first step is to get a hybrid white rose, a hybrid purple rose, and a hybrid orange rose.

For the hybrid white rose, purchase a white rose and yellow rose seed from Nook’s Cranny or Leif and plant them together. Make sure the roses are touching each other, and also ensure that there’s an empty space next to either rose so that you can get hybrids. Mixing the white and yellow has a chance of breeding a hybrid white rose.

Next, purchase two white rose seeds and plant them together for a chance to get your first hybrid purple rose.

For the third step, purchase one yellow rose and one red rose seed and plant them next to each other to get a hybrid orange rose. Once you have the orange rose, set it aside till after the next step.

With the hybrid white rose and hybrid purple rose you got from the first two steps, plant those two flowers together for a chance of getting yet another hybrid purple rose.

Now, do note that this second hybrid purple is not the same one as the purple you got from breeding the first two whites. The genetics in these two purples are different, and trying to use the first purple for the following steps will not give you a blue rose.

Once you get the second hybrid purple rose, plant it next to the hybrid orange rose. At this point, you have a chance of getting either a second hybrid orange rose or another hybrid red rose (be careful not to mix these up with seed red roses from the store).

Your goal here is to get either two more second stage hybrid orange roses, or two hybrid red roses. If you manage to get the two second stage hybrid orange roses first, breed those two together until you get two end-stage hybrid red roses (also not to be confused with the previous hybrid reds and seed reds).

With two end-stage hybrid reds, you can plant them together to start trying for blue roses –these will give you the best chance of getting blues.

If you manage to get two reds first from breeding the purple and orange, you’ll also have a chance of getting blue roses, though the probability here is lower than the end-stage hybrid reds.

And… that’s pretty much it. It’s an extremely tedious process, but once you manage to get two blue roses, you can plant them together and they’ll breed blues from that point forward.
